Crosses of Unknown Origin

As an adjunct to our highly-illustrated Maltese Cross reference book, and as a public service to philatelists, this Web site will provide a continuing flow of information and provocative presentations about Maltese Crosses. Two types of Maltese Crosses will be illustrated on this Web site over time that will titillate, stimulate and challenge philatelists interested in Queen Victoria line-engraved postage stamps. 1. Maltese Crosses of Unknown OriginThese off-cover adhesive stamps have Maltese Crosses which are different from the Common Cross or its usual variations (as seen made by obliterators supplied in April and May 1840 as well as replacement obliterators), but of unknown origin. The authors would appreciate receiving dated covers cancelled with Maltese Crosses similar to those shown, in order to assist in determining the origin of these crosses. See our archive of Crosses of Unknown Origin 2. Maltese Crosses Requiring VerificationThese are on-cover Maltese Crosses of known origin but for which it is uncertain if they were a constant finding from those post offices, or a spurious and unrepresentative finding. As with the crosses of unknown origin, submission of additional on-cover examples from philatelists may help to confirm that the ‘different' Maltese Crosses were consistently used by that post office. See our archive of Crosses Requiring Verification All examples submitted by readers of this Web site and used in the book (with their permission, of course) will be properly credited. ALL SUBMITTED MATERIAL SHOULD BE SENT TO PROF. S. DAVID ROCKOFF AT drockoff@cox.net.
